The Astus 22.5 is the largest in the range of yachts designed with world famous naval architects VPLP. This new Astus flagship is as exciting as the previous VPLP models. Using the Astus tried and trusted telescopic beams the new trimaran boat can be rapidly expanded from a road legal width of 2.5m, or a marina friendly 3.0m, to a super stable 4.9m sailing platform.
The new boat’s even larger floats provide massive buoyancy and their wave piercing shapes keep this boat powering through the chop. The 22.5 is manufactured using Astus’ successful resin infusion process making the boat stiff and very light at only 650kg, so acceleration off the slightest puff of wind is instant. Whether helming from the trampolines or inside the cockpit the 22.5 is a joy to sail. Even when sailing single handed, double digit speeds are effortless. This boat can quickly reach destinations which are beyond those of similarly sized monohulls.
The Astus 22.5 isn’t just about fast cruising – customers have a wide choice of sail and rig options to suit their sailing preferences, all complimented by the best deckware by Selden, Harken and Ronstan. So, whether you like beating the big boys around the cans or taking things more leisurely there is a set up for you. Of course, there are plenty of comfort and convenience options like a sprayhood, lazyjack bags and headsail furlers.
The new 22.5 is practical too. The boat is light enough to tow behind an ordinary family car and mast raising and float deployment can be done single handed with the aid of clever optional kits. The boat offers plenty of storage above deck with an anchor locker ahead of the coach-roof, further watertight lockers in the floats and in the cockpit sole as well as open storage under the cockpit bench seats.
Like all of the recent Astus boats the new family member has minimal draught when the swing keel and rudder are retracted, floating in only 34cm of water. Following its successful introduction in previous Astus boats the centreboard case is again offset to port in the 22.5, permitting easy access to the 4 berth cabin. Headroom down below is impressive for a 22 foot multi-hull and the cabin feels light and airy thanks to large side windows. A V-berth in the bow and two quarter berths, together with optional galley units and lots of stowage under the berths and under the cockpit sole make this a capable family cruiser.
Since we took delivery of our own demonstrator last Summer the Astus 22.5 has proved a big hit with British customers too. Sea trial participants have grinned from ear to ear once they’ve experienced the exhilaration which comes with sailing at speed. Yet, even timid sailers have praised the 22.5 for the reassuringly low angle of heel and the comfortable ride. No wonder then that the Astus 22.5 was shortlisted for European Yacht of the Year.
