Construction

RCD Status: The yacht conforms with the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC (Recreational Craft Directive) and is categorised A – “Ocean”. Built to MCA Category 2 charter requirements, but YOLO has never chartered.

Hull Construction:

  • Composite construction, moulded from female tools.
  • The hull is moulded using a combination of vinylester and polyester resin with the outer topside finish in a white special NPG gelcoat.
  • The laminate material comprises a combination of E Glass, Kevlar and Carbon Fibre specially designed for the yacht by the Oyster Design Team’s own structural engineers.
  • This ‘custom’ laminate offers significant weight savings, strength and stiffness advantages over a normal GRP construction, carbon for weight and stiffness, Kevlar for impact resistance.
  • The topside laminate incorporates a high-tech, foam-cored, E-glass/Carbon sandwich above the waterline, for additional strength, stiffness and insulation. This ‘core’ is applied using a vacuum bagging technique.
  • Beneath the waterline there is a monolithic (single-skin) composite laminate, with an Aramid / Kevlar layer, reinforced with a matrix of stringers and floors.
  • There are BS1088 standard marine-ply structural bulkheads.
  • Additional reinforcements are included in the way of the keel recess, the keel longitudinals, mast bulkhead, P-bracket, forestay and hull stringers.
  • Limber holes and/or tubes are installed at appropriate points.
  • Stringers, bulkhead landings and floors are formed over a non-structural, inert, polyurethane foam.
  • Air Draft: 89’2” / 27.20m.
  • Double boot top lines executed in RAL 7040 Grey.
  • Cove line executed in RAL 7040 Grey.
  • Antifoul colour - Seajet 033 Shogun Dark Grey – re-antifouled July 2023 with new zincs and prop speed for the stern gear.
  • Topsides polished July 2023. Ceramic finishing on the superstructure 2023.

Deck Structure:

  • Moulded in GRP with a balsa core for strength and insulation. In load bearing areas the core is replaced with plywood for additional strength, and all load-bearing fittings have backing plates or large washers. Within the foredeck is a recessed locker for anchor chain stowage, which is fitted with hinged lids and a stainless steel, clamp-type locking device.
  • Within the aft deck there is a large locker to port, which will allow the stowage of two 13kg propane type or other bottled gas cylinders. This locker drains/vents overboard at both high and low levels and has a flush, hinged lid. A central, Solimar flush hatch with hinged lid and drain channels, rubber seal and positive closing, gives access to a full width, large lazarette locker. A pair of stainless steel gas struts are fitted to the lid.
  • Within the lazarette is a folding step and a hanging bar for rope stowage.
  • The aft deck incorporates - two flush Solimar hatches, one of which gives access to the aft cabin.
  • On the foredeck there is a teak laid flush hatch that gives access to the forward sail locker. There is a dedicated ladder on the bulkhead plus a warp stowage rail.

Hull and Deck Connection:

  • The hull to deck connection is achieved by bonding the deck onto the return flange of the hull.
  • The deck edge incorporates a bulwark. The top of this bulwark has a clean GRP finish.
  • Stanchions and cleats are mounted on the bulwark.
  • 6 x 38mm (1.5") internal scupper drains are installed along the deck edge.

Deck Finishes:

  • Sidedecks, forward coachroof, winch coamings, cockpit seats, cockpit sole, helmsman's seats and areas either side of the main companionway are trimmed with laid teak. The teak decking is laid in approximately 48mm wide teak planking, using quarter-sawn planks and no visible fastenings, laid on epoxy glue. Planking is nibbed into the king plank and the decking is installed with margin boards around hatches, dorade vents, cabin sides and major deck fittings.
  • All locker hinges, catches and fillers are recessed into teak planking, where appropriate.

Bathing Platform:

  • The stern design incorporates a recessed platform, trimmed with laid teak. There a fold-down stainless steel bathing/boarding ladder with oval treads. The ladder is fitted with a lanyard and retaining pin for retrieval/stowage. The platform is accessed via an integral stairway from the aft deck.
  • An Aqua Signal 41 stern navigation light is mounted on the transom.
  • There is a hot and cold freshwater deck shower (along with additional deck wash outlet) located in its own locker within the transom.

Eyebrow Detail:

  • The vessel is fitted with an eyebrow detail on the main saloon deckhouse, which combined with recessed windows lowers the apparent height of the main saloon. A pair of stainless steel grabrails are also fitted. The roof of the main saloon is fitted with recessed laid teak decking aft of the sprayhood rail. Forward of the sprayhood rail, the area has a non-slip finish.

Keel & Rudder:

  • Centreboard keel providing shallow draft potential. The hydraulic lifting centreboard folds into keel. It deploys by gravity and retracted hydraulically. There are no fixed connections so in the event of a grounding, the centerboard folds back into the keel stub without being damaged.
  • Keel position indicator at pedestal.
  • Twin balanced rudders with GRP blades, foam-filled, bonded to carbon rudder stocks. The steering gear is rack and pinion by Lewmar. Rudders dropped and fitted with new seals (2024).
  • Lewmar torque rod steering is installed with a pair of pedestals each incorporating a 1.06m (42”) diameter Mini-Maxi type Carbon fibre, friction brake, and three bearing pedestal steering unit.
  • There is an emergency tiller that fits on top of either rudder stock from the after deck through the lazarette and onto the rudders.

Machinery

Engine & Gearboxes:

  • A single Volvo D4-180, 4-cylinder, turbo-charged diesel engine, of maximum potential power of 132kW (180HP) at 2,800RPM is fitted. The gearbox is a ZF63A gearbox, which gives a reduction of 2.52:1.
  • The engine instruments include alarms for low oil pressure and high water temperature, plus a rev. counter, oil pressure and water temperature gauges.
  • A Halyard Marine GRP exhaust water separator and GRP water lock.
  • Aquadrive couplings are installed at the inboard end of the shaft and this coupling also incorporates a thrust bearing to absorb shaft thrust and increase gearbox life.
  • The engine is mounted on flexible mountings. The combination of this and the thrust bearing considerably helps to reduce noise and vibration whilst lessening fatigue in engine parts.
  • Duplex Racor fuel filter system 76-500.
