A robust, go-anywhere blue water cruiser, with traditional sweeping lines and a long encapsulated keel the Giles 38 was designed in 1971 by Laurent Giles. Moulded by Blondecell Mouldings the hull and decks were supplied to professional yard and amateurs alike to fit out. The design evolved with a short counter transom to become the Laurent Giles Bowman 40, built between 1972 and 1986.

HARAMBE was fitted out by her original owner over a six year period. The finish is to a standard you would expect from a professional builder. Laid out below decks to accommodate a maximum of seven she has proven to be a reliable and safe ocean cruiser. Her inventory highlights include:

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

After eight very happy years sailing our Twister 28 we decided to search for 'a larger Twister'. Over the next two years, we viewed numerous options including the Rustler 36, Tradewind, Vancouver, Rival, Victoria, Halberg Rassey and Saltram Saga. Early in 2016 we just happened across a photograph of a Giles 38 - not a boat we'd ever heard of but we knew of the designer Laurent Giles - for sale privately in Devon. When we first saw her moored in the River Yealm we both said 'Wow'. More 'wows' followed when we stepped on board. She was first christened 'Pod', then renamed 'Ghost' and renamed again by us to 'Harambe'. We sailed her up from Devon, stopping in by the Scilly Isles for a week, and have since enjoyed many summers cruising the West coast of Scotland and the Hebrides and have found her to be a dry, comfortable yacht.. We have upgraded her in many ways during our ownership, wintering her ashore every winter since 2016. She is a confidence-inspiring, forgiving, well-equipped, capable, head-turning vessel. GRP yachts under 40ft were rarely made this strong and likely never will be again.
