About this Arden Ted Brewer

English

PRICE DROP OF $200,00.00 !!!

NEW PRICE $549,000.00 USD

Arctic Vixen is from the drafting board of renown naval architect TED BREWER.  She is the aluminum version of his Arden class which has also been built in fiberglass and steel.  In his book “Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia” Steve Dashew said she is “a go anywhere, do anything, bullet proof***cruising yacht.”  Arctic Vixen lives up to this high praise.  She has proven to be a fast, easily handled (she’s sailed by a elderly couple, he is 82!) and easily maintained boat.

The primary concerns in the construction and outfitting of the boat has been safety, reliability and simplicity.  She is a sailor’s boat ready to go anywhere in the world.  The beautiful interior with mahogany walls and other exotic woods comes as a surprise given the functional no nonsense exterior of the boat.  As the pictures show, however, nothing can detract from the beautiful lines of the boat with its graceful sheer and modest overhangs.

Arctic Vixen is a three masted tern schooner (design length on deck 61 feet, Panama  canal measurement 72.18 feet) able to carry a generous sail area which consists of a jib on roller furling, a staysail on roller furling, a fore sail with in-boom furling, a main sail with in-boom furling and dutchman mizzen sail.  All these sails are controlled from the cockpit.  However, in addition to these sails, Arctic Vixen comes with a gennaker or code zero, a fisherman, a mizzen staysail, a storm sail and a light air jib for downwind sailing. Stored in a locker in Trinidad is a spinnaker and a second serviceable jib.

Reefing is simple because of the in-boom furling which is superior to in-mast furling because it cannot jam and keeps the weight down low where it belongs.  In winds above 25 knots, the owners usually sail with just the jib and the mizzen and will cruise at 8 to 10 knots.  In light winds of 8 knots with the appropriate combination of sails she will make 4 knots. Under power she will cruise at 6-7 knot depending on the wind and sea state at 2300 rpm; she will do 9 knots in a dead calm at 2700 rpm.

The primary anchor is a Bruce 110 pounds on 300 feet of oversized chain.  The Maxwell windlass drops the chain into a deep chain locker so raising and lowering the anchor can be done with the foot switchers at the bow.  There is also a remote switch.  The second anchor on the bow is a Fortress FX-125 which can be deployed on 30 feet of chain and 300 feet of braided nylon rope.  There is a keel mount Sampson post on the bow and two large cleats. A third anchor, a Fortress FX-55, is at the aft of the boat which can be deployed from a dingy as a stern anchor.

There are double cleats mid-ship for spring lines.  The dock lines are all 1 inch braided nylon.  There are the same large cleats on the stern.

Also on the aft deck is 300 feet of ¾ inch braid nylon line on a reel.  Generally, the stern anchor has been set with lighter more easily handled rope.  The ¾ rope and Sampson post are for setting a drogue.

Over the butterfly hatch midship is a frame for carrying a dingy but the overbuilt davits allow the owners to care the 10 foot 4 inch Highfield dingy with the motor mounted on the davits. The dingy and engine come with the boat.  The dingy was new January 2023, the engine is 5 years old but the boat was not used during covid.

There are two deck lockers mid-ship built into the hard dogger. The port-side locker holds the propane tanks.  There is also a teak deck box near the main mast for sail covers storage etc.

On the aft deck is an aluminum storage locker/box for storing the outboard engine gasoline, oil etc. All flammables are stored above deck.   Also on the aft deck is a BBQ with shelves and a deck shower.

On the port and starboard sides are ladders built into the railings that can be lowered for dingy access or swim ladders.  There is also ladder access to the dingy on the stern.

Below deck there is a fore-peak chain locker in the bow with easy access and good chain fall.  A half height watertight bulkhead separates it from the  forepeak cabin.  In the plans this cabin shows two single berths and they have been framed but the owner intended to use this cabin for sail and rope storage.  A full watertight bulkhead separates this cabin from the main cabins and so access is by a hatch on deck.  Forward in the main body of the boat is a cabin that contains 3 single births, a hanging closet, a desk and a wash basin.  Ventilation is by a ceiling hatch, 4 port lights and a dorade.

The fore cabin opens to the Saloon which has generous seating and an exceptional table that seats 8. The port and starboard settees can be used as berths if necessary.  Aft in the saloon on the port side is a storage cabinet. Opposite on the starboard side is a bookcase and below it the spirits locker.  Moving aft, are a head and shower on the starboard side and a little further down is the galley.  The galley is notable for the amount of storage.  It has a near center line double sink that drains to a holding tank.  The four burner Force 10 stove to port is below an opening port light and there is a dorad above the counter with a fridge below and a microwave at eye level.  The galley is at the foot of the companionway stairs providing ready access to the cockpit

Also at the foot of the stairs is the door to the starboard cabin which has a chest of drawers, a double bed and direct access to the head (an ensuite arrangement).  Cross ventilation is provided by port lights on the starboard side and a portlight to the cockpit and a dorade.  Above the foot of the bed is a roomy storage locker.

Aft of the galley and a bank of drawers is the nav desk, the Icom VHF and SSB radios with storage for charts under the lid of the nav desk.  Someone at the nav desk can speak directly to the helmsman through a port light in the cockpit.  This is an usual but very effective location for the nav desk.

Proceeding aft one comes to the owners cabin.  It has 3 large hanging closets and 10 good sized drawers and two shoe boxes, so there is ample storage. Upon entering the cabin is a small dressing area with an open hanging closet which also houses the water maker which is mounted in compartment with a drain and is readily accessible.  Next to this closet is a small desk with bookshelves and a locker above. On the starboard side of the desk area is the owners head.  A head board wall separates the dressing area from the double bed which means that lights can be on in  the dressing area with out disturbing someone sleeping.   A nice touch for night watch changes.  Ventilation is provided by an open deck hatch, 4 port lights and a dorade.  More storage is found under the double bed.

At the top of the companionway stairs there are large lockers to port and starboard flag storage is forward and the EPIRD on the starboard side.  The large lockers have been used for the storage of the storage of sailing gear.

The cockpit has a hard dogger with Diamond Seaglase tempered glass.  To port there is a large table area that accommodates paper charts, a VHF mike and power outlets.  On the starboard side is the chart plotter and AIS.  The cockpit will comfortably seat 8 and the benches allow even the tallest person to stretch out for a naps.  There are 6 large “cubbies” built into the back of the cockpit coamings.  There is a beautiful cockpit folding table.  The helm pedestal has a bracket for holding binoculars and houses the engine controls, the wind indicator, the/ speed/direction and course controls rudder indication for the hydraulic steering, a 12 volt outlet for a computer etc and a magnetic compass.  The cockpit can be fully enclosed, or the sides can be rolled up with just the Bimini in place.  There are 8 Andersen winches in the cockpit and each sheet is on its own winch which makes  sail adjustment quick and easy.

Aft of the cock pit is the roof of the owners cabin.  The mizzen mast, 300 foot rope reel and aluminum inflammables storage box are found here.  Stepping down from the owners cabin to the aft deck one finds a over-built water proof deck hatch which opens to a lazaret in which the drogue and emergency tiller, dock lines aft teak deck chairs are stored.  This lazaret also provides access to the quadrant and rudder post.
