About this Nelson 40 Pilot

English

The Nelson 40 is a true all weather boat, renowned for their sea keeping ability. This is the Nelson 40 Pilot which gives her an outside helm position on the aft deck.

Although this boat was built in 1979 she was completely refitted between 1999-2003 and when we say completely pretty much the whole interior was stripped out and redone and new engines installed.

Since 2003 till 2021 when the current owner bought her she was very lightly used due to the former owners ill health.

The current owner has used her extensively on the West Coast of Scotland, launching in the spring and not retuning till the Autumn. She has been an exemplary boat and continually maintained by a knowledgeable owner.

Hull, deck & superstructure / General

Peter Thorneycroft, the founder's grandson, founded the firms of Keith, Nelson & Company Ltd and T.T. Boat Designs Ltd in 1955 and 1965 respectively. In 1959, Peter Thorneycroft built the first real Nelson developing it into the 40ft prototype Motor Yacht  “Edelweiss”.

This fine 18 knot sea boat triggered a revolution at Trinity House. With a Nelson 40, pilots could be ferried safely from ship to shore in any weather and became the norm for this purpose. The hulls for the Nelson 40 were built by Halmatic and were so successful that they were then from 1965 fitted out to a very high standard as Gentleman’s yachts.

M.V. "Bailey" was commissioned in 1980 for a gentleman in Belgium who as a precaution had her epoxied from the waterline down.

In 1999 a complete refit took place. The original Ford Sabre engines were removed and replaced with new clean burn, smooth running Perkins 225hp engines and associated machinery, plus Mase 4kva genset. All linings were stripped out to assess the condition before a final refit by the world renowned Dickies yacht builders with her being re commissioned in 2003.

Sadly due to ill health the owner was never able to use her fully and in 2007 she was purchased by a gentleman who renamed her "Lady Redhouse" after his engineering firm.

Again due to personal circumstances she received only light use before being laid up ashore in 2014.

The current owner purchased her in 2021 and has used her extensively on the West Coast of Scotland.
