About this Malo 42

English

A true ‘do it all’ ocean cruiser from one of the best names in Scandinavian yacht building. With just three owners since new and boasting a fantastic short-handed cruising specification. Rarely available in the UK market and now offered for immediate sale.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

An iconic yacht from an iconic Swedish boatyard, designed and delivered during their heyday, the Malo 42 is the true ‘Swedish army knife’ of the yachting world. The Leif Ängermark design was rumoured to cost substantially more to build than her later Malo 41 replacement, thanks to her focus on hand-finishing, over-engineered specifications, and epic build-quality.

Originally supplied and delivered to a Dutch owner by the Netherlands Malo dealer in the late spring of 1997 as build number 121, and named ‘GOLDEN FLUKE IV’, WILD ORCHID was used very lightly for local cruising before her onward sale in the Netherlands to her second UK-based owners in 2002 who renamed her WILD ORCHID and enjoyed extensive cruising, living aboard for 6 months of the year and sailing across the Atlantic, round the Caribbean and the coast of South America from Guyana to Panama, Central America etc before returning to the UK in the Spring of 2011. In the Spring of the following year, WILD ORCHID was sold to her third and current owners who were stepping up from their much loved Malo 96.

Continually serviced, updated and improved through her current ownership, with a focus on simplification and ease of handling, WILD ORCHID is now presented in fantastic condition and would be ideally suited to those looking for a comfortable, capable, ocean cruising yacht, equally at home crossing oceans as cruising around the Solent, W.Coast of Scotland or the Med’. Her specification highlights include:-

• Teak laid side decks – overhauled and recaulked 2013/14

• Epoxy treated from new

• 1.95m lead keel and skeg-hung rudder

• Transom with integrated bathing platform

• Powerful 97hp Yanmar engine with shaft drive, 3-bladed prop and rope cutter

• Sleipner 24vDC 10hp twin-prop tunnel bowthruster

• Aft cockpit configuration with Targa-arch for mainsheet

• Sprayhood, bimini and cockpit tent arrangements

• Slab-reefing mainsail system with 3-reefs

• Andersen hydraulic genoa furling system

• Andersen hydraulic cockpit winches

• Spinnaker pole

• Three double cabin interior layout with owner’s cabin forward, en-suite heads and separate en-suite shower cabin.

• Twin armchair saloon layout

• Hand-polished mahogany interior joinery

• Eberspacher Hydronic diesel-fired hot water and cabin heating system allowing generation of hot water without connection to shorepower or running the engine

• Fresh water and air cooled refrigeration with galley and saloon fridges

• Fusion Bluetooth stereo system

• 12vDC and 24vDC system with recently replaced AGM battery banks

• Superwind wind generator and solar panels

• Updated Raymarine instrument package with twin plotters, Quantum radar, CHIRP Downvision echo-sounder, EV-1 autopilot system, AIS transceiver and DSC VHF

• Windpilot Pacific Plus windvane steering system (currently uninstalled but could be reinstated if required for ocean crossing)

Now offered for sale to make way for new land-based projects, WILD ORCHID is UK-flagged and deemed UK VAT paid.

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

We bought WILD ORCHID in 2012, after our earlier happy experiences of sailing a Malö when owning one of her little sisters, a 34 foot Malö 96.

WILD ORCHID has fulfilled all of our expectations as a go-anywhere cruising yacht with high build quality and sea-kindly motion, thanks to the 5,500 kg of lead in her encapsulated keel. She has a deep aft cockpit with a sprayhood and cockpit enclosure, which give good protection when under way and can also provide a comfortable “conservatory” sitting environment in all weathers when at anchor. She is spacious and comfortable below decks, with a beautiful wood finish. We particularly appreciated the configuration of two heads with a separate shower room when friends came to visit.

We enjoyed sailing WILD ORCHID to the Isles of Scilly, accompanied by a pod of dolphins, and we’ve spent several summers as digital nomads, using her as a mobile office whilst exploring the Channel Islands and the coasts of Normandy and Brittany. We’ve kept her well maintained and updated over the years, to ensure that she is ideal for short-handed sailing and spending time exploring remote anchorages. On the other hand, her aft cockpit and passarelle would suit stepping ashore in the Med and her windvane self-steering system could easily be reinstalled to facilitate ocean crossing.

We have had a fantastic time cruising in WILD ORCHID and very much regret that, due to new responsibilities back home, all good things must come to an end, so we have to put her up for sale. We would like her to go to a good home!

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

Every Malo 42 is a reflection of its owner’s tastes, and every Malo 42 is hand built with painstaking care. Her good looks and beautiful sheer line indicate perfect pedigree. With an easily driven medium displacement hull, the Malo 42 is the go-anywhere, go-any-time liveaboard yacht.

Every Malo is an individual yacht. We go to great lengths to encourage each owner to take influence on his boat’s appointment. About the only thing a future Malo owner will have to accept is the shape of the hull and aft cockpit design. This does not mean that every boat’s interior has to be designed from scratch. We have a selection of standard interior designs, all of which are modifiable and which our small but flexible workforce turn onto perfect reality. This might sound expensive, but it is in fact very affordable.

Our West Swedish home island of Orust is seeped with a timeless boatbuilding tradition, and our family has been making fine craft for generations. This heritage is our credo: To create cruising yachts for demanding people.

External Highlights:-

• Wide, uncluttered deck space. High moulded gunwhales, strong stanchions and immaculate non-skid teak. The Malo 42 has a great feeling of security.

• The integrated sprayhood simultaneously protects the Malo 42’s deep cockpit and increases the below deck living area.

• Malo’s Targa-arch supports the mainsheet traveller and the cockpit illumination. It keeps ropes clear and heads out of danger.

• When ordering a Malo 42, every client can influence the yacht’s detailing, such as for example, the transom with an integrated bathing platform.
