About this Hardy 20 Inboard Diesel

English

Hardy Family Pilot 20 - 1988 - £9,950

The Hardy Family Pilot 20 is a capable, river & coastal small cruiser, with good accommodation for her size. The steering characteristics for sea or river cruising at low speeds are very good and generous side decks greatly assist movement around the boat. The wheelhouse offers full standing headroom, with a galley to port and seating aft under a full cockpit canopy, while the cabin offers seating around the table when its set on the pedestal, or a double berth for night time use. There is also a fully enclosed and separate, marine flushing toilet.

This particular example is fitted with an economical Volvo Penta 2003 28hp Inboard Diesel and is presented in good order throughout. Engine fully serviced and hull freshly antifouled ready for the season ahead.

Mechanical and electrical systems

Volvo Penta 2003, 28hp 3-cylinder directly cooled Inboard diesel engine attached to a saildrive unit that is fitted with 3 bladed propeller for good thrust at relatively low engine revs.

The Saildrive's hull gasket was changed in summer 2020 and the engine fully serviced in late 2022.

Engine instrumentation includes: Tachometer, charging volts, temperature and fuel levels.

An engine exhaust temperature alarm is fitted.

Wheel steering to transom hung rudder, with trim tabs fitted to the transom too to assist ride comfort and economy.

The manufacturer's sales literature suggest an economical cruising speed of 6+ knots and a maximum speed of 10-12+ knots. The boat's owner suggests more like 5-8 knots has been his experience and the speed range that he has operated the boat at.

2 x 12 volt batteries are charged by the engine's alternator.

Tankage:

Fuel: Approx. 50 litre plastic fuel tank (new in 2020) under the cockpit's port seat.

Water:55 litre flexible water tank under the forward berths, with deck filler to starboard.

Accommodation:

The accommodation offers up to two berths in a single cabin.

Main Cabin: with V-berths forward that may be converted into a double berth by means of the drop-down table. Storage beneath the head end of each berth and shelf forward, easily stowed folding table converting to a double berth. Overhead opening hatch to foredeck.

Heads compartment: Located to starboard with sea toilet and provided with large-boeled marine-flushing toilet and double hinged door for ease of access.

Step up to Cockpit; with helm position to starboard, with engine instrumentation, controls and fold-down helmsman's seat.

Galley opposite helm's position -to port side - with a stainless steel sink and pumped water supply, two burner gas hob and grill.

Cockpit/Wheelhouse: Sun-roof in wheelhouse roof with ventilator and removable fabric cover. Seating aft, to port and starboard either side of the engine box.

Full interior lighting, within the cabin and curtains to all windows.

History and Construction

Built in 1988, by Hardy Marine of Norfolk to a design by Colin Mudie.

Hull number: 1823.

Blue GRP semi-planing hull, with white GRP superstructure, with a moulded in non-slip surface to the decks. Open-backed wheelhouse to cockpit with seating and a enclosed cockpit canopy. Self draining anchor locker. Coir rope fender. Teak handrails.

This particular example's cockpit sole has been lifted and replaced; opportunity being taken to laminate new supporting structures that also aid the stiffening of the hull moulding; all done to good standard. The under sole areas have been painted out to assist in keeping these useful stowage areas clean, in common with the under-berth stowage areas in the cabin.

An aluminium frame that is mounted on the wheelhouse's roof will be seen in the pictures. This is fitted with multiple vertical spikes by way of a seagull deterrent (apparently it works very successfully!), but this may be easily removed if not required.
