Construction

RCD Status: Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC (Recreational Craft Directive) as she was built and placed into use within the EU prior to 1998.

Hull Construction:

  • Balsa core fibreglass using fibreglass mat, unidirectional roving, and mat roving combination to develop an extremely rigid, yet light and well insulated structure.
  • The sandwich construction in combination with the usage of high-grade unidirectional roving gives the following advantages in comparison with conventional GRP layup: 40 per cent lighter; 150 per cent higher panel stiffness; increase in strength; insulation.
  • High stress areas are specially strengthened with unidirectional roving orientated in the direction of the stress. Transverse floors and longitudinal stringers are made up of unidirectional roving and fabmat around a low-density core.
  • There are limber holes in floors to allow drainage to sump.
  • Internal bulkheads and Intercostals are marine grade waterproof plywood (teak faced on visible surfaces).
  • The engine-beds are incorporated in hull.
  • Special care is taken to ensure a rigid foundation and correct bonding.
  • The mast-step is fabricated from aluminium bolted to reinforced floors and stringers.
  • High quality abrasion resistant colour pigments are used in gelcoat.
  • White gelcoat hull and superstructure finish with blue waterline and cavita lines.
  • Hull epoxy treated.
  • Copper coat on undersides renewed (2020).

Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • Hand laid-up moulded fibreglass with balsa core for stiffening and insulation, extra reinforcement incorporated in areas of winches and fittings.
  • The deck has a high strength/weight ratio and is bonded to the hull with layers of roving and through bolted.
  • The deck is over laid with hand-picked teak planking completely renewed in 2011.
  • The chainplates are stainless steel through bolted to longitudinal bulkheads which are securely bonded to the hull and deck.
  • Chain plates are provided with backing plates to spread loads adequately and are grounded to a keel bolt.
  • A full length aluminium toerail provides structural rigidity for the hull/deck joint and a multi-purpose sheet take-off point.
  • The stanchion bases are attached to the toe rail, which is anodized for protection.

Keel & Rudder:

  • An external fin keel, cast to high accuracy in lead with added antimony, is through bolted to the hull by keel bolts cast in stainless steel.
  • The cantilevered, balanced spade rudder is moulded from fibreglass and fitted with a high strength aluminium rudder stock.
  • The rudder was replaced in 1994 with a strengthened design supplied by Baltic Yachts.
  • The rudder stock passes through bearings and a stuffing box strongly bonded to the hull and deck.
