47.8ft bluewater cruiser
“Kekeni” is a 1985 Whiting 47 bluewater cruising yacht. Built in Auckland, New Zealand and designed by Paul Whiting, a very successful and influential IOR racer and yacht designer in the 70’s and 80’s.
As you would expect from a Whiting design, Kekeni is very well built, strong, practical and sails very well.
She has cruised from New Zealand to the Pacific Islands, Australia, Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and is now lying in Puteri Harbour, Johor Bahru (Malaysia) where her owner has reluctantly put her up for sale.
Registered in Australia, her new owner could benefit from easily bringing her back into Australia, or of course opt to flag her elsewhere as they continue their coastal or bluewater cruising plans.
On deck, the centre cockpit is large with good access to all winches and lines. There is a roller furling genoa and a slab reefed main, as well as a self-tacking jib.
Sails and rigging age are unknown, the current owner (since 2016) believes the rigging was changed in 2010.
Designed and maintained with practicality as the focus, the current owner has kept her simple and clean, with updated interior furnishings as he has been living aboard for extended periods of time.
The interior of the Whiting 47 is very open. With a v-berth cabin for 2 in the bow, and another double berth in the aft cabin, then 4 other single bunks. Kekeni has a large saloon, perfect for entertaining or simply keeping cool in the tropics thanks to the adequate air flow.
The galley has a double sink, 3 burner gimbaled stove and oven, fridge and freezer. All cushions, bench tops, curtains and carpets have been replaced by the current owner.
The engine is a powerful 90hp Ford Lehman Barracuda with 3,005 hours on it. Engine access is easy, with full access available to all components. The 3 x 150L stainless steel fuel tanks have been opened up and thoroughly cleaned out.
The engine also runs a head exchanger for hot water as well as a eutectic system for cooling the fridge and freezer, meaning you do not need a generator or a drain on batteries for either.
Kekeni represents a good deal for a new owner ready to sail off on new adventures. Available for viewings by appointment in Puteri Harbour, Malaysia.
