The Moody 42 evolved from the Moody 40, which went out of production in 1999. The design extended the 40’s transom by a few feet, allowing for larger transom steps, spacious lazarette lockers, and an expanded aft cabin.
As a classic big Moody, the 42 features a center cockpit, high freeboard, and generous displacement, all tailored for blue-water cruising. Accommodations include three cabins, with two en suite heads and showers, and a single-berth cabin primarily for use on passage.
With a longer waterline and balanced masthead rig, she has a slightly faster pace than her predecessor. The 42 is manageable for short-handed sailing. Sugarwing is fitted with slab-reefed sails with full battens and lazyjacks.
Her fin keel has a standard draft of just over 6 feet, Deck gear is robust and well-sized, with Lewmar 48ST primary winches and additional 30ST winches for halyards and reefing lines on the coachroof. The mainsheet winches are positioned on the afterdeck, just behind the helm.
Sugarwing’s fixed windscreen is complemented by a full cockpit tent, adding weather-protected space at anchor with wide visibility. Deck storage includes two deep lazarettes (no cockpit seat lockers to preserve below-deck headroom) and a large chain locker with enough space for a few fenders, despite the installed Lewmar electric windlass.
The Moody 42 is thoughtfully designed for comfort below deck. The companionway steps lead to a central chart table on the port side, with part of the galley tucked beneath, offering twin sinks, a concealed trash bin, and storage.
The rest of the galley, to starboard, includes the main storage, a deep fridge, and a gimballed stove.
The saloon is roomy and inviting, featuring two comfortable settees, one of which is U-shaped around a double drop-leaf table. Fixed portlights and two hull windows bring in natural light, while two hatches and dorade vents help with airflow. The warm teak joinery provides a cozy feel, with ample lighting to brighten darker areas.
The Moody 42 offers impressive sleeping accommodations. The forecabin features two spacious single berths that can convert to a double with an infill, plus a heads with an integrated shower.
Aft, a passage berth can be closed off at both ends, creating a private cabin. This space is often used for storage and has a lee board for use at sea, or as a dressing area for the aft cabin, doubling as an extra bunk during longer trips.
The highlight is the roomy aft cabin, with a large centerline island berth and en suite head with a separate shower. A hatch and several fixed portlights provide natural light, and there’s generous storage for clothing and personal items.
Engine access is convenient, with panels on both sides allowing for easy maintenance.
Owner's comments:
"I sailed Sugarwing from UK in 2022, through Biscay and Spain / Portugal in 2023 / 2024, on my own. She's adequately equipped to sail entirely single handed and there's no need to leave the cockpit (all lines and controls are here). Everything works perfectly, she's in mint condition, has been antifouled, serviced and maintained every year since I bought her in 2010 and is really, good to go!"
