Westerly Konsort  -  1982  -  £10,750

A twin-keeled example; competitively priced to reflect 'detailing' work to be done - rather than a significant major re-build - the engine is a 1999 replacement; the standing rigging has been replaced; the sails are like new; the running rigging is laundered and stored below; the hull has been epoxied and the boat is fitted with a hot and cold pressurised water system.

Designed by Laurent Giles, built by Westerly Yachts Ltd. in 1982. 'Aries of Mylor', with her yard number of D320 and sail No. KT 393 is an approx. mid-sequence example of the twin-keeled version of the ever-so-popular Konsort. She has the centre-line mounted, double leafed table and - very significantly in the case of the twin keeled boats - fitted with the foam-formed and integrally moulded GRP lateral stiffeners in the keel attachment areas. She has the open shelves and single closed lockers beneath the side decks (aft end of the saloon). The hull's topsides were originally all white to the deck level, but at some point someone painted a blue 'sheer line' and applied the 1987-styling lines to update her external appearance.

Built by the 'phoenix' Westerly Yachts Ltd, that from 1982, was seeking to demonstrate their determination to offer something better than the products of the previous company by [amongst other things] using teak veneered plywood rather than the Sapele of the earlier boats

The keel areas are 'as dry as a bone', the teak veneers in good order and such features have been enhanced by the replacement of the original Bukh 20HP engine with a 24 HP version; standing rigging, the purchase of replacement sails and the epoxy coating of the underwater sections of the hull.

At time of writing 'Aries' has been laid ashore for six years. When she was de-commission her engine was serviced and winterised, the sails and running rigging removed from the spars and the boat generally 'put to bed'. However, externally, the topsides' blue styling stripe now need re-painting; the sprayhood's canvas needs replacing (the hoops will be fine), bright woodwork such as the tiller would benefit from re-finishing to choice and the winches should be cleaned and serviced. Inevitably she needs a fresh coat of antifouling paint. Internally, there is evidence of a rainwater leak in the forward cabin that has led to the port-hand overhead lining panel dropping down and the main saloon windows could do with being re-sealed.

Accommodation

Six berths in two cabins:

Forecabin with vee berths and infilling cushion make for a generously sized double berth. Side shelving and lockers beneath the berths and overhead hatch. Two opening portlights for cross-flow ventilation. The vinyl lining in this cabin is in need of replacement - although there has been attention in the past and, in common with later examples of the class, head panels have already been fitted beneath the for'deck and the side decks.

Heads compartment: with Lavac Sea toilet, pull-out wash basin and pressurised hot and  cold water through a shower-type faucet. Under-deck closed locker. A large hanging locker, with sub-divider is located opposite the heads compartment.

Saloon: Parallel settee berths to port and starboard, with a deep open bulk storage shelf outboard, plus a closed locker to either side. The port side's settee extends to make a double berth, a centre-line double-leafed table accommodates up to six diners comfortably. A generous quarter-berth, located portside aft - abaft the chart table, is provided with additional light and ventilation by an opening portlight to the cockpit's foot well.

Chart table: with chart stowage within and deep fiddled hull-side shelving for almanacs, tidal stream atlases etc. Nasa Navtex and the VHF, plus entertainment radio located here.

'L' shaped galley: with stainless steel sink, hot and cold water through a mixer tap and a foot-pumped back up pump to the freshwater supply; refrigerated top-opening coolbox, and a Favell Vanessa stove with two burners, oven and grill. Crockery stowage provision and two deep drawers for cutlery/cooking utensils, with a large closed locker beneath the side deck.

A Wallas paraffin heater is fitted (within the hanging locker space, opposite the heads compartment), with a single, warmed air outlet through the main bulkhead to feed the main saloon. a 12V DC radio/CD player is fitted alongside the chart table, with speakers fitted to either side of the main saloon.

Mechanical and Electrical systems

The original Bukh DV20, twin cylinder diesel was replaced (in July 1999) with a new DV24ME and, although not absolutely clear, in the maintenance log carried on board appears to have only seen approx. 472 hours since its installation.

A lip seal by Volvo Penta is fitted to the inboard end of the stern-tube and a fixed, two- bladed propeller is fitted on the shaft. A rope cutter is also fitted.

A number of engine spares have been left on board.

A 'Deluxe' engine monitoring panel, with an oil pressure gauge and temperature gauge is fitted and supplemented by an 'after market' rev counter and voltmeter.

The electrical systems have been extended, with an additional distribution/switch panel and two 110 A/hr batteries being switched through a rotary selector switch, with either battery intended to be capable of starting the engine individually.

Spars and Sails

Rigged as a bermudan, masthead sloop on Selden spars (badged as by Kemp Masts), with a Rotostay Mk IV roller reefing system fitted on the forestay. The standing rigging has been renewed, although the precise year of replacement has not yet been established. Halyards and reefing lines are led aft to banks of stoppers and two single-speed winches located at the aft end of the coach roof.

All the running rigging has been laundered, labelled and stowed below while the the vessel has been out of commission.

A rod kicker to support the mainsail's boom while reefing the mainsail is fitted.

The running rigging has all been removed from the spars; laundered and left neatly stowed on board.

A replacement mainsail is by Ullman Sails and believed to have only seen one and a half seasons' service before having been valeted and stored at the original sailmakers for four years. The sail is fitted with provision for three reefs and is covered with and supported on the main boom by a blue-coloured acrylic 'Packaway' sail bag and lazyjacks.

Similarly, the cross-cut roller reefing genoa, also by Ullman Sails, is of the same formal age as the mainsail, but hasn't seen service for the last six years.

An older roller-reefing genoa has been left on board by way of a 'spare'.
