Purchased in 2002 in the Netherlands, MV Bendix was moored in the Borneokade, Amsterdam alongside our other boat, Vernal. In 1998, after a few years of commuting, we decided to move to the UK. Vernal was sold, and MV Bendix began a refurbishment. All the fishing gear, freezer and refrigerators, cooling holds etc were removed and the boat thoroughly cleaned! She was brought to Southampton on 19th December 1999, and to Essex Marina in April 2004, where we have lived ever since. Significant work has been undertaken over these years.
The crew quarters and captains’ cabin were rebuilt to have 2 double bedrooms (one with an additional bunk), shower/bathroom, kitchen and plenty of built in storage.
The bridge has remained almost original and fully functional, as has the main engine room.
The old fish storage area has been fully converted into a master bedroom (with waterbed) and built-in storage an office, with plenty of desk space and storage.
The lounge and dining area has been recently redecorated with sustainably sourced bamboo flooring, new ceiling, insulation and lights.
There is a huge bathroom with a double bath and walk in shower.
The boat is fully centrally heated (using diesel) and a new boiler was installed 2 years ago.
Where she comes into her own is the outside space. We have built a terraced sun deck and BBQ area which can easily provide entertainment for a substantial party (and we often do!). Our lock-down purchase was a 2m x 2m hot tub that fits 5 people comfortably.
In the front storage is a washer/dryer and the back up generator. On the back deck we have a table and bench seating area in order to enjoy the sun anytime of year!
We have just taken the boat to dry dock (AliCat work boats, Great Yarmouth) for water blasting, antifouling, anodes, painting, and any remedial work. MV Bendix underwent a full out of water survey (report available) and the repairs were completed by the Alicat team as requested by the surveyor.
