Meniscus is a Westerly Discus, a development on the successful Westerly 33 Centre Cockpit Ketch. The Discus was first introduced in 1979 to a Laurent Giles design The Discus made its first made appearance at the London Boat Show of 1980 using the well proven 33 hull. However the difference being the Discus sported an aft cockpit which resulted in a very spacious saloon panelled in Sapele and with decidedly sound and up-market interior. The hull is one of the best ever produced by the winning combination of Laurent Giles and Westerly Yachts (UK) Ltd. The discus’s popularity can be put down to her moderate lines, with longish bilge keels for directional stability. Combine this with a roomy and airy interior it is easy to see why the Discus proved so popular. It is believed that 300 were built by the time production finished in 1984 However, capping it all is her unbeatable ability to cope with heavy weather. Point of interest. It is claimed that in the early 80’s an American bought a Westerly Discus at the boat show and then sailed her back to the States This may folklore but having sailed the 33 Ketch version during the 70’s in some rough weather I can believe it ! |
