Almost any planing powerboat can make use of trim tabs, changing the way your boat handles in certain conditions. But how exactly do they work, and what’s the best way to make use of them on your boat?
What Are Trim Tabs?
In case you aren’t familiar, let’s explain the basics of trim tabs – and what they’re used for in a boating environment. Trim tabs are essentially plates that are used on the transom of the boat. Placed on both the starboard and port side of the boat, these tabs give you direct control over the angles on which the boat rides – in effect, getting greater control over your boat.
Generally, trim tabs are attached to a switch available at the helm, giving you the power to make adjustments to them as you’re driving the boat. In the hands of an experienced user, trim tabs can improve speed, balance weight distribution, increase performance efficiency, and even improve the safety of the people on board.
But what adjustments do you need to make? And in what conditions are trim tabs effective?
Levelling the Boat
The original purpose of trim tabs is to keep the boat level on the water – and it remains one of the most important ways to use trim tabs. If your boat is weighed down to one side due to an imbalanced weight distribution, you can use trim tabs to even things out. Once stable and steady, your even-tilted boat will make it easier for the boat to operate at peak performance (and avoid drifting too much to one side, making it hard to walk around the boat).
Dealing with Under-Powered Boats
Sometimes, boats are under-powered, equipped with an engine that doesn’t give them the horsepower they need to run smoothly. That means you could hit the throttle hard, but still fail to see momentum for a while – all while the boat takes 20 seconds or longer to get level. These conditions are annoying if you want more control and manoeuvrability – and they render certain water activities, like water skiing, practically impossible. With the help of trim tabs, you can improve your plane time and stay on plane consistently, despite the lack of power.
Better Managing Rough Waters
If you’re on the open water and the wind is stirring up big waves, you can’t afford to operate your boat at max speed. You’ll need to slow down to keep yourself and your passengers safe. However, there’s an unfortunate side effect here; slowing down could make your boat fall off plane, forcing you to tinker with the throttle constantly to find the right balance.
Here, trim tabs are effective as well. With the right adjustments, you can slow your boat enough to deal with the choppy waters and still remain on plane. Your bow will remain relatively down, the waves will be more manageable, and you can maintain a steady speed without having to constantly make adjustments.
Of course, it’s important to never trim a boat fully down in a “following sea,” when the boat is cruising in the same direction as the waves; here, it’s much safer to keep the bow high.
Improving Water Sport Performance
Water skiing, wakeboarding, and other water sports are fun – but they can be miserable if the boat isn’t operating smoothly or efficiently. With trim tabs, you’ll have the power to make up for any quirks your boat is dealing with. Lack of engine power in a power boat may still be an issue, but you can keep the bow down and remain steady for long periods of time – which is necessary to keep your water athletes happy.
Reducing Wave Impact
If you have a covered boat with a full enclosure, you don’t have to worry about a wave getting everyone wet. But with an open back, this can be a bit of a concern. Quartering the waves is an advantageous manoeuvre in rough waters, making it easier for the captain to stay on course – but it can also lead to a major splash for everyone else onboard. With trim tabs engaged, you can work to adjust one side of the boat higher, lowering the downwind side. It won’t completely eliminate the effects of water spray – but it should reduce them.
The Benefits of Automatic Trim Tabs
Much of this article was written to help people manually adjust and control the trim tabs on their boat. But these days, it’s also possible to make use of “auto-levelling” trim tabs, which function autonomously to keep the boat level.
If you’re inexperienced with trim tabs or if you just like the idea of keeping things “hands-off” an automatic trim tab setup may be in your best interests. That said, some people don’t trust automatic trim tabs to work the way they want – and some people actually prefer having direct, manual control over them because it adds to the boating experience.
Of course, you should know that automatic trim tabs don’t require you to permanently and exclusively use the automatic levelling feature. Any time you want, you can disable the automatic functionality and use these tabs like you would a set of manual trim tabs.
The Importance of Practice
Even with the right trim tabs in place, safely controlling a boat is something that takes practice and experience. Make sure you spend plenty of time becoming familiar with the features of your boat and practicing its operation in a live environment. Don’t go beyond your comfort zone prematurely and don’t take on unnecessary risks – especially if you have passengers. Over time, as you gain more experience using trim tabs and keeping your boat under control in increasingly difficult situations, you’ll feel more confident – and you’ll be able to keep your crew safe at all times.
