Construction
De Groot Palma 45 single screw motor cruiser, built by P.G Steelcraft (UK) in the late 1970s, exact year unknown.
Welded steel construction with angle frames and full-height plates floors for reinforcement.
Displacement cruiser with a hard-chined hull with raked stem and transom stern.
The superstructure consists of fore, side, and aft decks, the forward and after coach roofs, and the central wheelhouse/deck saloon.
A seven-year structural rebuild was completed in 2009 and the accommodation has since been completely re-fitted. A detailed photo log of the restoration along with supporting documentation is available. Surveyed in 2018 by Mike Fox of Fox Associates (YDSA) - copy available upon request.
Hull:
The structural rebuild included the replacement of all hull plating found to be below 3.5mm thickness. The new plating is 4mm in the bottom and 5mm in the topsides. The hull bottom, from the keel to the chine, has been over-plated with 4mm plate.
The new plate is plug welded through the underlying plating.
a new box section keel has been fitted and is concrete-filled. A new circular hollow stem bar has been installed, tapering into the keel. The original external circular hollow gunwales have been renewed. Square hollow section steel has been welded internally between each of the floors to provide two full-length stringers, one on either side of the centreline.
The interior and exterior steels have been professionally grit blasted and epoxy primed, finished with two-pack polyurethane. The topsides are painted in blue enamel, and the bottom is painted with antifoul. The interior is finished in grey semi-gloss.
Superstructure:
As part of the restoration, all deck plating was renewed in 4mm plate, welded to an original external margin inboard at the gunwale, and newly formed steel angle at the base of the coachroofs and deck saloon. The front face of the forward cabin and sections of its roof has been replaced, also the entire aft cabin structure and sections of the deck saloon sides. The foredeck beams were replaced in steel angle, and box section steel was welded to the side deck beams for reinforcement. All parts of the structure have been grit blasted and epoxy primed.
The inside/underside is finished in grey semi-gloss, and the exterior is finished in white polyurethane and grey deck paint.
Steering Gear:
Balanced steel rudder supported by a bronze bearing in the skeg extending from the keel. The steering system is new Vetus hydraulic system.
Mechanical
Mechanical:
Single Rolls Royce C4S 4-Cylinder 180hp supercharged diesel engine, coupled to a fwd/reverse gearbox installed on resilient mountings to substantial steel bearers beneath. Conventional shaft drive to a three-bladed bronze propeller.
The engine is closed circuit fresh water cooled, with 'Keel cooling' pipework on each side of the hull bottom.
The gearbox oil and exhaust are both seawater-cooled.
A Fisher Panda diesel-driven generator is installed in a soundproofed housing to port in the engine bay area. Water cooled with wet exhaust discharge through the port topside.
Tankage:
Fresh water in one fixed tank in the galley and two inflatable tanks for the forward shower. X2 40gal forward and x1 85gal midships
Twin fuel tanks (x 1000l per tank) are built into the inside of the topsides, abeam of the engine. They were constructed as part of the restoration. The fuel system is approved type neoprene, with isolators on the tank outlets, and on either side of the two filter/water separator units.
