"Juliet Kilo" is a Cherverton 40 from Cheverton Workboats of Isle of Wight. Built from a hull and bulkheads purchased in 1977 and fitted out by the current owner (a professional boat builder) over 7 years. Cheverton took the unusual step to allow one of their hulls to be fitted out given the impressive drawings and vision of the owner and their trust in his ability shines through today.

The boat is simply outstanding and featured in a Motor Boat & Yachting 6 page article in 1995. The author reporting - "This labour of love is something special"

She remains in pristine condition and I invite you to review the photographs as testimony to this exemplary boat. 

Owners comment

"Juliet Kilo" attracts great attention wherever she goes. I have had many offers to purchase her over the years but I knew when the time would be right and have now come to the decision to pass her on.

She has proved herself to be a good sea boat, powerful and safe with an easy, quiet, cruising speed of 8-8.5kts. I have sailed her extensively in her home waters of the West of Scotland and previously the North West of England. I have also completed a circumnavigation of the British Isles including the Orkney's, covering 2800nM; she never once gave me bother.

She has been well maintained throughout her 40 years and updated as necessary. She can safely go to sea tomorrow. 

Brokers overview

"Juliet Kilo" is owned and was built by the current owner. Jackie Kay bought the hull and main bulkheads from Cheverton's in 1977. This was no easy feat in itself as following his approach Jackie received a letter from Cheverton's saying they were a professional boat building firm with a reputation to uphold and therefore they didn't supply hulls to the DIY market!

Jackie explained he had reviewed the DIY hulls available and wasn't motivated to use any, which is why he had come to Cheverton. Cheverton sent him line drawings of their 40' hull and Jackie spent the following 4 months producing drawings of his proposed build to present to Cheverton. They were suitably impressed and Jackie was invited to their facility in Cowes.

Following a meeting, tour and a nice lunch with the managing director Jackie was allowed to purchase their 40' hull.

So started a 7 year project which came to fruition in 1984. 

"Juliet Kilo" also featured in Motor Boat & Yachting's 1995 October issue. The author says "this labour of love is something special". And for Jackie this has been a labour of love, love of quality, craftmanship and excellence in every detail.

She was also invited to attend the Bristol International Festival of the Sea in March 1996 in a personal letter from Teresa Bristow.

How has she stood the test of time?

I must admit I always approach boats that haven't been fitted out by the manufacturer with trepidation. I shouldn't have worried, Cheverton's clearly understood Jackie's ability and to be honest I was speechless! Not only has she been designed by a keen eye for practicality and detail but she has been fashioned by a master craftsman. Speechless, because she doesn't look a day older, it is impossible to comprehend she is 40 this year.

A trick of time transportation, a joy to behold.

Hull, deck & superstructure - The detail of work and condition in all areas remains exceptional.

- GRP hull painted Black with a 2 pack polyurethane paint system.

- The deck areas are epoxy sheathed 5/8ths marine ply, laid with Teak.

- The superstructure is also epoxy sheathed 5/8ths marine ply with a White 2 pack polyurethane paint system.

- The interior face of the superstructure is veneer paneled over the epoxy sheathing.

- Varnished detail & features are a 2 pack polyurethane varnish system.

- Interior  - Iroko, Teak and Koto (for the light finish in the forecabin, heads and shower).

- The deck head features Iroko structural beams, picked out with white egg shell Formica. Formica was used for longevity (never needs painted) and was press cut and bonded in place in the construction phase.

- Dual wheel steering positions.

- Full cast iron keel through bolted.

Interior & Accommodation

'V' berth in in the foreword cabin, Twin berths in the aft cabin and a convertible galley double give 6 berths. The forward heads and shower are split across the foreword lower corridor giving access to both separately.

- Varnished Teak and Iroko give substance to the furniture, deck head beams and structure. The varnish work is without flaw and gives a luscious feel.

- The forward corridor, cabin, heads & shower are finished in Koto, with Teak & Iroko detail.

- The wheelhouse / upper saloon seating is Chesterfield style Maroon leather in very good condition.

- A varnished floor leading from the port entrance door to starboard side deck door is bordered by a Maroon carpet leading forward.

- Off-white curtains for side windows with drawbacks.

- Oatmeal fore & aft cabin mattress covers. All mattresses are fire retardant foam.

- Galley / lower saloon seating is patterned with infill cushions to form a double berth. Seats and infill cushions are fire retardant foam.

- Average cabin height - 1.98m / 6'6". Min 1.90 / 6'3", Max 2.13m / 7'

Forecabin

- The Forecabin is accessed via a corridor through a bi-fold door.

- Large 'V' berth with anchor locker forward.

- Hull side storage lockers and shelf over.

- Hull side oval portholes and deck hatch.

- Storage with under berth access as well as door fronted lockers below.

- The floor has a light attractive tartan carpet and a removable duck egg blue plinth to aid access to the berth.

Heads compartment.

- Off the corridor to port is a dedicated heads.

- Duck egg blue sink with hot and cold pressurised water.

- Duck egg blue Baby Blakes electric toilet with holding tank.

- Plenty of storage in door fronted lockers and a vanity cabinet.

- Timber framed mirror.

Shower room

- Off the corridor to starboard is a dedicated shower.

- Duck egg blue sink with hot and cold pressurised water.

- Shower with mixer tap.

- Shower sump pump.

- Foldaway shower seat.

- Hull side port hole.

- Opening portlight.

Corridor

- Two hanging lockers.

Wheelhouse / Upper Saloon

- A really ambient area with large windows on three sides. The windows are 10mm armoured glass for safety.

- The 3 forward windows have wipers.

- The port and starboard side has three windows with the central port helm window opening for ventilation and communication.

- Aft to port and starboard are doors opening out to the side decks.

- The pilot position is to port with ships wheel, instrumentation and an adjustable seat. Opposite to starboard are the electronics and computer driven navigation system. 

- Aft of the pilot seat is a further singe seat facing into the saloon.

- Opposite is a bench seat and raised seat.

- Aft to starboard of the access steps to the galley is a chart working area with chart table offering internal storage. General door fronted storage lockers. Holders for chart working instruments including dedicated storage for a Portland Course Plotter.

- Aft to port of the access steps to the galley is the visual entertainment. 12v TV, Satellite TV, DVD.

Lower saloon / galley

- Down a few steps to the aft of the pilothouse is the lower saloon / galley which then leads to the aft twin cabin.

Galley

- To port is the galley with 3 burner gas hob.

- Sanyo combination microwave/cooker.

- Round stainless steel sink with hot and cold water via a mixer tap.

- Large top loading refrigerated cold storage.

- Dedicated storage for cups, and table wear.

- Utensil storage drawer.

- Plenty of general storage for cookware and provisions and a dedicated bin locker.

Dinette

- Opposite the galley is a dinette which will convert to a double berth by lowering the table and using infill cushions.

- The table will offer dinning for 4 in comfort.

- Outboard is a hidden cocktail cabinet with lid and glass rack above, either side of it are open storage areas for books or more drinks storage.

- Outboard are two portholes.

Aft twin cabin

- Accessed through the lower saloon.

- Two single berths, one to port and one to starboard. The starboard berth has a bedside locker at the head.

- Large central hanging locker aft with additional door fronted lockers with fiddled tops either side.

- Shelves outboard of the berths.

- 2 coachroof windows either side and one either side aft.

General Specification

Engine & machinery

Wearing light coloured slacks and shoes, sitting on the engine room floor talking with the owner; I am stuck for words! The owner breaks my bewilderment with a smile and says "do you like it". "The thing is Jackie, I have never seen anything like it, it's simply stunning".

I will leave the pictures to tell the story but clearly this engine is maintained by someone who loves it.

- Caterpillar 3208. V8, naturally asperated, fresh water cooled, 210hp diesel engine with approx. 7905 hrs.

- Twin disc 1.5:1 reduction reverse gearbox.

- Max speed, approx. 9kts @ 2200rpm, happily cruising at 7.5kts @ 1350rpm on little over 10l/hr / 2.25gal.

- 100amp engine alternator.

- The emphasis for the engine room is on ease of maintenance and therefore there is plenty of space to access all components, even under the engine! 

- There is a small aluminium topped work bench with vice.

- Even the oil can has a dedicated position!

Bow thruster 

- Proportional / variable power thruster with Joystick control. This is a powerful system giving complete control.

Generator

- Fischer Panda 4000s (4Kva) diesel generator. Overhauled 2022.

Deck / Equipment

Tubular stainless steel double guard rails secure the foredeck to the point of stepping onto the flat side decks running aft. The side decks secured with stanchion posts and guard wire with an opening hull section to port mid-ships for access; the section is stored on the cabin side when not in place. There is a foredeck raised toerail with scuppers and side deck bulwarks are raised to allow water to flow overboard both house substantial mooring cleats in open sections.

The bowsprit is wide and structural and holds a central guide for mooring warps from a Sampson post and two separate bow rollers either side, one for the anchor to starboard and the port one for a mooring pick-up.

There is a varnished central foredeck deck hatch with opening lid and open varnished rope storage bin in front of the wheelhouse with 4 Dorade vents.

The wheelhouse roof is set out to store essentials in typical loving detail.

Aft is a counter deck giving access to a lazarette and the steering gear. Varnished steps lead up to the second deck which is secured with tubular guard rails. There are seats to port and starboard forward with stowage and seats either side of the wheel steering. The view forward is uninterrupted.
