History of Whitby

Whitby Boatworks was established in 1963 by Kurt and Doris Hansen in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. The company quickly garnered a reputation for producing high-quality sailboats, notably their blue-water cruising yachts, which became favourites among sailors for their robust construction and excellent sailing performance. The Hansens initially focused on building wooden boats but soon transitioned to fibreglass, a relatively new material at the time, allowing for more durable and less maintenance-intensive vessels.Whitby Boatworks is perhaps best known for the Whitby 42, a ketch-rigged cruising sailboat introduced in 1973, which became quintessential in the world of long-distance sailing. Designed by Ted Brewer, the Whitby 42 featured a roomy layout, substantial storage, and a hull design suitable for both coastal and offshore voyages. The model was a significant success, with over 200 units built, and it continues to be a beloved choice among amateur and seasoned sailors alike.Although the original Whitby Boatworks has ceased production, the legacy of its craftsmanship endures. The company's premises no longer serve as a hub for boat manufacturing; however, many Whitby 42s and other models remain in active use, maintained by devoted owners. The Whitby Boat enthusiasts' community remains vibrant, keeping the spirit of the brand alive through forums, meet-ups, and continued appreciation of these well-designed sailboats.
