About this Oyster Lightwave 395

English

Oyster commissioned Carl Schumacher to design a light displacement high performance one-design cruiser / racer. Thirty-one were launched between 1988 and 1990, Orvieto is hull No 019.

Exciting to sail, yet safe and simple, the 395 has a masthead rig, which is easy to handle while family sailing. Lightwaves have competed well under the CHS and well as shorthanded racers, but the majority are now used for fast cruising, the most well known Lightwave owner who sailed many sea miles was Pip Hare of IMCO fame.

DETAILS

Owners notes

Launched in 1989, Orvieto has been well maintained and continually updated almost regardless of cost.

She had a complete refit at the start of 2006 when my ownership began. She had been laid up in Anglesey after the 2003 Fastnet and I had her trucked back to Hamble and placed under the care of Yachting Sports where she was stripped down to a virtual shell, keel off and refitted from there. She has a redesigned fin and bulb keel making her stiff and stable for the solo and double handed racing for which I’d bought her, rewired, re-plumbed, re-rigged. She regularly gets into double figure speeds in any decent breeze.

There are three cockpit lockers, a huge one under the seat that takes sails, a dinghy and just about anything else you want, at the stern there are two smaller lockers, one takes a liferaft, the other two 907 Camping gaz bottles

She had a complete new Jefa rudder and bearings fitted 2014 by David Heritage in Cowes, she is currently tiller steered but I have a direct drive Whitlock Cobra pedestal with a new wheel and Lewmar quadrant which comes with the boat should the next owner prefer – I’m an ex-505 dinghy sailor and personally prefer the feel of a tiller and the fact that in port it folds up out of the way making the cockpit space much more useable.

Her last race in 2012 from Cowes to Brixham in a 25 knot SW’erly and in which she was 3rd on CHS handicap, on the return ‘cruise’ downwind in 25 – 30 knots of SW’erly we hit 18.4 knots of boat speed surfing off Portland Bill and were averaging 10 to 12 knots most of the way
