McGruers of Clynder, an illustrious boat manufacturing company, has a rich history that harks back to 1910. The company was established in Clynder, a small village on the eastern shore of the Gareloch, also known as ‘The Gareloch’, an attractive location adjacent to the Firth of Clyde in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. This strategic location provided a natural advantage for launching their crafts directly into the sea. McGruers was reputed for their quality craftsmanship and traditionally constructed wooden-hulled craft.
Throughout the early to mid-twentieth century, McGruers built a reputation for producing high-performance sailing yachts, winning numerous regattas. Notably, they were known for producing boats utilising the Scottish Larch on Oak method. Their reputation for building eye-catching, high-quality, seaworthy craft resulted in many prestigious orders, including an order from the Queen's Consort, Prince Philip, in the 1950s.
Currently, the legacy of McGruers continues as they are based in Rhu Marina, on the Firth of Clyde. Their specialisation now lies in restoring and maintaining wooden boats although their core values of quality craftsmanship and attention to detail remain unchanged. They continue to play an essential role in preserving the timeless allure and heritage of wooden boats. The name McGruers still holds its timeless charm, drawing upon over a century of unmatched Scottish boat building tradition.
