History of Devonport

Devonport, originally founded in the 17th century, has a long and storied history intertwined with British naval traditions. Initially established in 1690 by William of Orange, Devonport Royal Dockyard began its journey as a shipbuilding hub for the Royal Navy. Located in Plymouth, Devon, the dockyard was an integral part of the naval base, responsible for the construction and maintenance of numerous Royal Navy vessels, especially during the turbulent periods of the 18th and 19th centuries.Throughout the 20th century, as the nature of naval warfare and shipbuilding evolved, Devonport adapted to these changes. The dockyard diversified its operations to include refitting and maintaining a variety of naval and commercial vessels. In the 1980s, the company shifted its focus towards the luxury yacht market, rebranding itself to capitalize on its prestigious craftsmanship and heritage. Under the name Devonport Yachts, the company began producing high-end, custom-built yachts for a global clientele, combining traditional skills with modern technology.Today, Devonport is renowned for its bespoke superyachts and remains a symbol of British maritime excellence. The company is now part of Pendennis Shipyard, having relocated its commercial operations to Falmouth, Cornwall. However, Devonport's historic dockyard in Plymouth continues to serve as a key naval base, maintaining its legacy as a cornerstone of British maritime heritage. Under Pendennis's wing, Devonport Yachts continues to uphold its reputation for elite yacht construction, blending its storied past with contemporary innovation.
