Cal Boats, a name synonymous with quality sailboat manufacturing, began its journey in 1959. Founded by Jack Jensen, a former aerospace engineer, the company initially operated under the name Jensen Marine in Costa Mesa, California. Cal Boats quickly rose to prominence with their line of high-performance sailboats, attributed to the engineering brilliance of Jensen and designer C. William Lapworth. The company's early models, such as the Cal 40, revolutionised yacht racing and won numerous accolades, thereby cementing Cal Boats' reputation as a pioneer in the sailing world.Over the years, Cal Boats expanded its range to include various models catering to both novice and experienced sailors, earning a loyal customer base. The company's emphasis on innovative design and sturdy construction contributed to its long-standing success. The Cal 40, introduced in 1964, became particularly famous, being the first production sailboat with a fin keel and spade rudder—a revolutionary design that greatly influenced future yacht designs.Jensen Marine was eventually sold to Bangor Punta Corporation in the 1960s, which continued to produce Cal sailboats into the 1980s. Although production has ceased and the original company no longer exists, the legacy of Cal Boats lives on. Many of their models are still in service today, cherished by boating enthusiasts for their reliability and racing pedigree. While no longer an active manufacturer, the name Cal Boats remains an iconic chapter in the history of sailboat design.
