Daniamant ODEO Distress Flare was proud to receive the award for Best Safety at Sea Product of the Year (Hardware) at this years Safety at Sea Awards. The Safety at Sea Awards recognize those who improve seafarer competence and risk management with innovations and achievements in the fields of training, operations, equipment and services. The Safety at Sea Awards 2018 was held on the 18th October 2018 at the Le Méridien Piccadilly Hotel, Mayfair, London a prestigious event with many leading players in the marine safety industry attending.
The criteria for this category are that the winning entry must demonstrate an innovative and original development that has the potential to improve safety on board/or onshore. Entries are sought from manufacturers of life saving appliances, monitoring systems or services that protect life or the vessel. Daniamant was up against stiff competition.
Daniamant CEO Kevin Rough stated “This is fantastic recognition for Daniamant and such an innovative product, its been an evolution in design, but a revolution in offering alternative solutions for existing safety products. Electronic Visual Distress Signals (eVDS) is a growing market and ODEO has been there from the start driving change and legislation and buyer behavior. To win this category when up against such strong competition is a real boost for our employees having worked so hard to get the product to market.”
The judges said, Daniamant ODEO Distress Flare is not only safer than traditional pyrotechnic flares but improves upon their design, lasting for 8 hours at full illumination instead of 30 seconds. Unlike traditional flares, it produces no heat or flames and has no explosive compounds so can be safely stored and disposed of. Plus, it is re-usable, running on replaceable batteries. It was a “Bright idea that is simple, sustainable and user-friendly.”
Whilst originally designed for marine use, its lightweight, safe performance means that it is incredibly useful for any outdoor activity. The smaller size makes the ODEO Distress Flare ideal for mountaineering, skiing, kayaking, expeditions etc. - any activity that can benefit from the added safety and security of carrying a distress flare - without the unwanted dangers. The ODEO Distress small size and waterproof rating IP68 (50m) also makes it an ideal safety device for divers.
The ODEO Distress is designed with consideration to on-going developments in regulatory requirements, making it a genuine alternative to the pyrotechnic red hand held flare. The US Coast Guard is now leading the world in developing standards for electronic Visual Distress Signal Devices (eVDSD’s) as a replacement for the hand held pyrotechnic flare. The ODEO Flare also outputs an SOS signal during its flash pattern as described in Annex 4 to COLREGS, and is thus an internationally recognized distress signal.
